At Albemarle, we provide a wide range of opportunities for children, which enable them to develop a natural curiosity about the world in which they live. Through carefully planned and well-resourced lessons, children partake in practical exploration and discover more about real-life experiences. They consolidate their learning, further their thinking and develop the skills, knowledge and understanding they need in order to think creatively and critically about our world and beyond.
Intent
We follow the Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC) scheme which aims to provide a range of opportunities to foster a natural curiosity in children, encouraging them to ask questions and seek answers about the world around them and beyond. Lessons aim to help children with the acquisition and progression of scientific knowledge, concepts and skills, across the year groups. The National Curriculum will provide a structure for the Science curriculum being taught throughout the school and is supported by the well sequenced PKC scheme. Our curriculum aims to develop a love for Science in all children and develop them into inquisitive and enthusiastic young scientists. Our science curriculum is ambitious, rich in content and demonstrates clear progression.
Implementation
Through carefully planned and well-resourced lessons, children partake in practical exploration and discover more about real-life experiences. Topics in Science are taught on a half-termly basis with each class being taught one Science lesson a week. Children are encouraged to ask their own questions and are given opportunities to use their scientific skills and research, to discover the answers. We build upon the knowledge and skills developed from previous years. The ‘working scientifically skills’ are embedded into lessons to ensure that skills are systematically developed throughout the children’s school career and new vocabulary and challenging concepts are introduced. After key knowledge and vocabulary are introduced, children will write their own definitions to demonstrate understanding. Through thoughtful planning and regular reviews of prior learning, our students can retain and confidently recall this knowledge through quizzes held in class and during whole-school assemblies.
Impact
Our fun and engaging Science lessons help children to consolidate their learning, further their thinking and develop the skills, knowledge and understanding they need in order to think creatively and critically about our world and beyond. Our practical approach ensures that children learn through first hand experiences which are complemented by workshops, trips and interactions with experts during events such as ‘Science Week’. Children leave Albemarle with a knowledge and understanding of the world they live in but also with a desire to find out more as they move into the next phase of their education.
